Restore dbase w/out backup

Postby oming on Tue Jul 28, 2009 8:39 am

Hi! I am new to Sybase. I inherited a huge problem is restoring an entire dbase w/out a backup dbase. To wit:

1. The makeshift server I inherited runs SYbase ASE 12.5 with Win2000 Advanced Server.
2. Unfortunately, the backup server _BS don't run for reasons my predecessor didn't mention. Thus, no backup dbase had been made.
3. Comes the inevitable when the server experienced motherboard failure and I have to restore the system in a new CPU.
4. Online resources on Sybase tells me that in order to restore a dbase, a backup dbase is needed.

Question: Can I restore the system dbase in the new CPU using the primary dbase itself?

Hi,

Yes, If your previous hard disk are still intact and the database files are in good condition. You just have to attach these HD's to your new OS and do the following:

1. Install a new Sybase Software
2. Copy or install your EBF
3. Configure a new server using the previous Server name
- Use minimal configuration
- Just enough to register your server to the Win registry
4. Shutdown Sybase
5. Copy your previous Sybase files to the new Sybase folder overwriting
your currently installed sybase.
-master.dat
-sybprocs.dat
-all your user database files
You can construct the folders the way it was in your previous environment.

6. copy your previous <server>.cfg to %sybase%\
7. copy your previous sql.ini to %sybase%\ini
8. copy your RUN files (RUN_<server>.bat) to %sybase%\ase-*\install
9. Change your %sybase%\sql.ini hostname and portnumber to the current OS
10.Update your <server>.cfg to meet your current configuration.
11. start Sybase in single user mode -m
Verify your sysdevices.phyname drive name and path are all correctly pointing to the folders of your sybase files.

Otherwise update your sysdevices.phyname.

12. Checkpoint your master and shutdown
12. Start your Sybase normally...your good to go.
